October 23, 2013

This week’s spotlight dancer is local choreographer Jarrell Hamilton.

The Big Easy Award 2013 nominee for “Best Contemporary Choreography” and Coming Up Taller Award Recipient for the President’s Committee of the Arts and Humanities, Jarrell Hamilton sustains her position as one of New Orleans’s premiere choreographers and heartfelt performers.

Ms. Hamilton, native of New Orleans, Louisiana, earned her degree from the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University. Graduating with Honors, Ms. Hamilton was decorated with the University’s award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance. Jarrell initiated her formal studies at NORD/NOBA Center for Dance and NOCCA, where she enjoyed national recognition for her performance as a student. She furthered her education at the university of Meadows School of the Arts and earned a full scholarship to San Francisco Conservatory School of Dance as resident choreographer. After earning her B.F.A., loyal New Orleanian Jarrell returned home to cultivate the city’s dance society and culture.

Currently, Jarrell Hamilton choreographs locally and internationally under the Jarrell Hamilton Dance Repertoire. She performs in conjunction with the Crescent City Choreographers, Chard Gonzales Dance Theatre, Prophecy Dance Works, and the American Repertory Theatre. An advocate for social change, Jarrell educates thousands of children each year in the art of movement, so as to promote health and wellness as a positive channel for expression.
