Spotlight Artist: Maritza Mercado-Narcisse

This month’s spotlight artist is choreographer and dancer, Maritza Mercado-Narcisse. Maritza has had the privilege of performing her work on the Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out stage, the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage and Piccolo Spoleto. She is a Louisiana Division of the Arts Fellow and has studied with Susan Marshall, Doug Varone, Beppie Blankert & Milton Myers, to name a few. New Orleans has been home base since 1988 and has worked with a variety or NOLA based dance and theater artists including ArtSpot Productions, Moving Humans and Mondo Bizarro. Maritza has been a participant and faculty member with the Urban Bush Women’s Summer Leadership Institute, held here in New Orleans. It is through this relationship that she continues to explore the intersection between art and activism. She is “Mama” to Tyger, and Mateo and wife to J Hammons. This Summer Maritza premiered her company the Narcisse|Movement Project during the CAC’s artsit residency, The Distillery. Maritza will show the continued efforts of this residency in November at Dancing Grounds with the premiere of, the Agency, as part of the New Orleans Fringe Festival.
