Spotlight Artist: Nanette Ledet

September 24, 2014

Nanette Ledet, a native of New Orleans, attended Tulane University before relocating to New York City to pursue her career as a professional dancer, choreographer, and percussionist. She studied modern dance on scholarship at the Jose Limon School and ballet with Finis Jhung. Nanette performed with DanceBrazil, Solaris Dance Theater, Stephen Petronio, the New York Shakespeare Festival, Djoniba Mouflet’s Drum and Dance Ensemble, and many others. She also toured extensively in Europe and the Caribbean as an illusionist in a multimedia production that she created with her former partner. Her choreography was featured in these shows, as well as in numerous music videos, theater productions, and film. While living in Honolulu, she began her teaching career as a member of the dance faculty of the MidPacific School of the Arts, and also taught at the University of Manoa Community College, and for Very Special Arts Hawaii. Upon her return to New Orleans, she formed her current company concept, Rhythmic Tapestries, and continues to create original works of dance, spoken word, and original songs and music. Nanette received the 2004 Louisiana Artist Fellowship for choreography. Other local credits include her work as a performer and arts educator with Young Audiences, Jefferson Performing Arts Society, Very Special Arts La., Musica da Camera, and NORD/NOBA Center for Dance. She also choreographed the music videos for the first season of Disney’s “Imagination Movers” TV show for preschoolers. She is currently presenting her solo shows, “The Story of Tap Dancing in America” and “The Art of Improvisation” in regional schools and libraries. She is also a Wolftrap teaching artist, specializing in early childhood arts education and creating several original curriculums for her artist residencies throughout southeastern Louisiana, including her extensive work with special needs populations.
